Plastic surgery gone wrong

 

We live in a world where money will buy you almost anything. This also applies to cosmetic surgery. Unfortunately, many surgeons will perform cosmetic surgery with very high associated risks and complications. This is evident by the number of celebrities who have had bad plastic surgery.

The prevalence of plastic surgery procedures that have resulted in serious complications among celebrities, is evidence that the amount you pay for plastic surgery does not ensure a positive outcome. Although choosing a fully qualified plastic surgeon is likely to reduce the possibility of bad plastic surgery, the more extreme the plastic surgery procedure or procedures, the higher the possible risks and complications.

Rhinoplasty Gone Wrong

Rhinoplasty has a high potential for complications and revision rhinoplasty is even more complicated than initial rhinoplasty, with higher associated risks and complications. The celebrity that many people will think of when it comes to rhinoplasty gone wrong is Michael Jackson.

Although the outcomes from his other procedures are questionable, his rhinoplasty is a real example of how rhinoplasty can go wrong. This again affirms that regardless of how much you are paying the plastic surgeon, it is still possible to have botched surgery.

Pamela Lipkin, a nasal specialist and well respected plastic surgeon in New York City, studied photographs of Michael Jackson taken during his court case, she said,

“What I think happened recently is that something in his nose — a graft, an implant, something — has now come out through the skin,”.

When revision rhinoplasty has gone wrong it can be impossible to achieve a normal nose again, Pamela believes this was the case with Michael’s nose and she said,

“Michael Jackson has what we call an end-stage nose, a crippled nose, a crucified nose — one that’s beyond the point of no return,”.

 

Breast Implants Gone Wrong

Breast augmentation with breast implants has a number of associated risks and complications.  But even if you have a successful breast augmentation, breast implants can split or move at a later date.

Extra large breast augmentation with large breast implants has even higher associated risks and complications. Whether extra large breast augmentation looks wrong is subjective, however, certain complications are more likely, such as breast implant displacement issues.

An example of a celebrity who had large breast implants is Pamela Anderson. In my opinion, Pamela Anderson’s large breast implants were too wide for her chest wall. This resulted in her implants causing a tell tale pull between her breasts. Another complication with large breast implants is very noticeable implant edges showing through the skin, as was the case with Pamela’s. 

 

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure is considered the most dangerous plastic surgery procedure available, with the highest rates of fatality. Currently, in the UK both the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have advised their members to refrain from performing the BBL procedure. However in October 2022 another procedure called Gluteal Fat Grafting (GFG) was given the go ahead by BAAPS. BAAPS guidelines now advise that GFG is safe when fat is injected into the subcutaneous plane only under intraoperative ultrasound..

In the USA and other countries successful BBL procedures are performed and many plastic surgeons believe it is not as dangerous as reported. They advocate for the BBL procedure and believe the majority of deaths after a BBL have been due to poor surgical techniques and, or surgical errors.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the International Society of Plastic Regenerative Surgeons and the International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science, have joined together to form the ‘Task Force for Safety in Gluteal Fat Grafting’. The task force has issued safety guidelines with suggestions for surgeons who perform the BBL procedure. If you are considering a BBL ask your plastic surgeon about how they will perform the procedure and see if this correlates with the safety guidelines. This in no way means you will not have complications following a BBL. Deaths following brazilian butt lifts have been reported as recently as April 2022 at the Seduction Cosmetic Center in Florida.

This is just one of the numerous deaths recorded. In September 2020 Gia Romualdo-Rodriguez died during a BBL in Miami at the Xiluet Plastic Surgery clinic.

On their Google business listing, Xiluet state:

‘Making sure our patients are safe is our first priority. Our state-of-the-art facilities are built and run at the uppermost standards, to ensure the highest level of safety for your cosmetic surgery procedure.’

One of the procedures they specialize in is the BBL procedure yet Gia Romualdo-Rodriguez, age 46 died during her surgery when her surgeon caused an embolism when injecting the fat into her buttocks. The mortality rate associated with the BBL procedure is extremely alarming. The current figures estimate 1 in 3000 patients die during or following a BBL. This is significantly higher than any other plastic surgery procedure.

If you are considering plastic surgery in the UK, check if your surgeon is on the GMC specialist register and that the CQC rating for the facility where your procedure will take place is good or outstanding.

 

Plastic Surgery US

Deaths from Brazilian Butt Lift procedures and other types of plastic surgery procedures are sadly far too common in the Us. Fatality can happen due to poor surgical techniques or when inadequate care is given after the procedure. Here are my top tips to reduce the risks of plastic surgery in the US:

 

• Check your surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon.
• Ask if they have ever had any patient fatalities
• Ask what percentage of patients having the procedure you are considering have required intensive care in the past six months.
• Ask how many times they have performed this type of procedure in the past six months.
• Ask how many days a week they perform surgery and how many procedures they perform per day (operating for more than five days a week or performing more than six procedures a day is likely to increase the risk of surgical errors)
• Check what will happen If anything goes wrong and which hospitals they have agreement with if you need to be transferred.
