Many people hide having liposuction and I commend Amy for her honesty and sharing the results of her recent surgery on Instagram.
“I just want to be real about it.”Amy Schumer said after getting liposuction.
Like many women, Amy felt unhappy about the way her post-baby body looked, following the birth of her first baby in May 2019. After a C section and then undergoing a hysterectomy for endometriosis, Amy decided to have liposuction and has been completely open about it. She first spoke about her decision on the Dear Chelsea podcast when she said “I got lipo, and I’m feeling really good.”
And her actions show how happy she is with the results of her liposuction. Not only has she spoken about the procedure in numerous interviews, she recently showed off her new stomach in a photo she posted on Instagram.
Plastic surgery is not about extreme changes (unless that’s what you want). For many people, plastic surgery is about minor and discreet changes. This might be why liposuction is fast becoming one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of people having liposuction has been increasing every year, since 2018.
Liposuction Key Information
Liposuction can be performed on the:
- Face and neck
- Chest
- Stomach
- Arms (bingo wings)
- Hips
- Flanks (love handles)
- Back
- Inner and outer thighs
- Buttocks
- Knees
- Calves
- Ankles
Liposuction Techniques
The most popular technique is Tumescent liposuction. This is usually performed under a local anesthetic, although a general anesthetic may be required when multiple areas are being treated.
The procedure involves injection of saline which contains local anesthetic (lidocaine), and epinephrine, which helps to reduce bruising, swelling and blood loss. A small incision is then made and the fat cells are suctioned out with the liquid, using a micro-cannula, connected to a vacuum-like machine. Recovery is less painful as the local anesthetic takes around 24 hours to totally wear off.
Advancements With Liposuction
Vaser Liposuction, also called ultrasonic liposuction and uses ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells. This is fast becoming popular as the most gentle type of liposuction with a faster recovery.
SmartLipo, also called laser lipo, uses a laser to break down the fat cells. The advantage of SmartLipo is the laser stimulates collagen and helps to tighten skin.
Liposuction Risks and Complications
Regardless of the technique, liposuction risks and complications include:
- Hematomas (collection of blood)
- Seromas (collection of fluid)
- Nerve damage
- Swelling
- Skin discoloration
Liposuction vs Liposculpture
Liposuction and liposculpture use the same techniques. The difference is that liposculpture is performed to get rid of smaller localized pockets of fat and as smaller volumes of fat are removed, there is usually less swelling and bruising after liposculpture.
Liposuction and liposculpture will both remove fat cells permanently and as long as your weight does not fluctuate significantly the results are long-lasting. For the best results, liposuction or liposculpture should be performed by a specialist plastic surgeon.
My Opinion
I have had liposculpture on my stomach to remove a small pocket of fat that would not budge with diet or exercise. The more fat you need removing the higher the chance of complications and my advice is to get as close to your recommended BMI, before having liposuction.
