BIA-ALCL Update February 2024: UK Allergan Textured Breast Implant Group Claim

Breast Implants

Concerns about the safety of textured breast implants, particularly those manufactured by Allergan which is now part of AbbVie, is ongoing due to a potential association with a rare form of cancer. Recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2016, the cancer was classified as Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)

This update explores the current developments surrounding this issue, and the effort to seek justice for individuals impacted by BIA-ALCL linked to both textured and macro-textured breast implants. Leading this initiative in the UK is the legal firm Leigh Day, which has taken a prominent role in addressing these concerns and advocating for those affected.

Understanding BIA-ALCL

BIA-ALCL is a rare type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma associated with the use of textured breast implants. While these implants are designed to adhere to surrounding tissue, thereby reducing complications like capsular contracture, there’s growing concern about the potential association of the textured surface to the development of BIA-ALCL.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK is monitoring the BIA-ALCL situation, providing guidance for healthcare professionals and patients. The current advice is removal of textured and macro-textured breast implants is only recommended following a BIA-ALCL diagnosis. This advice aligns with the guidance about BIA-ALCL from the FDA (USA regulator), the TGA (Australian regulator) and international regulatory standards.

Symptoms of BIA-ALCL

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) may present with various symptoms. It’s essential to note that these symptoms are rare, and not everyone with textured breast implants will experience them. If you notice any concerning changes, it’s crucial to consult with the surgeon that performed your procedure, or if you are based in the UK you can contact a general practitioner (GP).

Common symptoms of BIA-ALCL include:

  • Persistent Swelling: Unexplained swelling or enlargement of one breast.
  • Pain: Discomfort, tenderness, or pain in the breast.
  • Lump or Mass: Development of a lump or mass in the breast or armpit.
  • Asymmetry: Noticeable asymmetry between the breasts.
  • Skin Changes: Changes in the skin, such as redness, rash, or texture changes.
  • Breast Changes: Changes in the feel, shape or size of the breast.
  • Delayed Seroma: Accumulation of fluid around the implant, occurring more than a year after surgery.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that these symptoms may also be associated with other breast conditions. If you experience any of these signs, seeking prompt medical attention for a comprehensive evaluation is recommended.
