CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is a body contouring treatment that was seen as revolutionary. The CoolSculpting® body sculpting, non-surgical treatment first received FDA approval in 2010 with additional applicators being approved between 20212 and 2015. On the 27th of August (2021) the FDA issued a Class 2 Device Recall Notice CoolSculpting® Elite System The CoolSculpting® System SW Release 2.0, SW Release 3.0, SW Release 3.0.1, SW Release 3.0.2.
The CoolSculpting Elite System FDA Recall has not happened in time to prevent the permanent disfigurement of numerous patients treated with Coolsculpting. Linda Evangelista has also experience adverse complications and recently publicised her own horrific experience on Instagram.
There is also a Class Action against Zeltiq Aesthetics and AbbVie who provided the Coolsculpting system. Patients claim that they were not properly or adequately warned about the possibility of a complication that may occur following treatment with Coolsculpting. The complication is called Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PH). PH causes a low development of tissue volume, in the area treated with CoolSculpting approximately two to five months following treatment. This tissue can only be removed surgically with liposuction or liposculpture. The completely opposite to decreasing tissue, the result patients seek with Coolsculpting treatments.
The class action proposes AbbVie were aware of this complication and actively provided financial support to providers that were using the CoolSculpting system, to cover the costs of the surgery required by patients who had been affected by PH. The class action also alleges AbbVie persuaded patients to not start a legal claim by paying patients
My Opinion
Body contouring using liposculpture can now be achieved with less associated complications, pain and faster recovery. Liposculpture also allows for greater control and produces predictable results when performed by experienced plastic surgeons. Liposculpture is often considered a simple procedure and it may be tempting to have liposculpture performed by a non-specialist plastic surgeon. I would strongly advise having liposculpture performed by a specialist plastic surgeon for the best possible result.
